Steven's Sister

My name is Mary, and I live in Brandon with my mom, my dad, and my brothers, Steven and David. My brother Steven has a disease called von Hippel Lindau disease, and it’s a cancer disease that causes tumors. Steven was diagnosed with von Hippel Lindau disease two years ago. He was 16 years old. He is a great brother and a great kid. Ever since he was diagnosed with this disease, he has not let VHL get in way of his school work or his hobby, soccer.

Steven has to take millions of tests for this disease. He was fine with that. But the thing that he did not want to hear was that he would have to have brain surgery for a tumor. But unfortunately Steven had to have brain surgery right after he was diagnosed. Then it happened again. One day this past May, Steven went in for an MRI and on the way home my mom looked at the MRI films and saw that one tumor in his brain was growing and the cyst was really big. The next day the doctor told Steven and my mom that Steven was going to have surgery again.

Now the surgery is over, but Steven still has lots more tumors in his brain. Now we need to find a cure for this disease so that Steven doesn’t have to have cancer or tumors or surgery any more. We want Steven to stay healthy in college and for the rest of his life. So we are having a fundraiser to raise money to find a cure. We are having a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, August 11th. The time is 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The place is Beef O Brady’s on East S.R. 60 in Valrico.

Please come to this amazing event to help find a cure for my brother!

Mary and her summer plans: an air mattress, tank tops, gym shorts, Jenga and the television!

Mary wrote this short sweet article about her brother because a dear friend found a way for Mary to create some press coverage for the pancake breakfast! She wrote it all by herself, and I only helped her type on the computer and cut her 750 word essay down to the mandated 300 words!

Tomorrow Mary gets her picture taken to accompany this small article.

That should be interesting!
